Warm Weather & Altitude Training

Nearly three decades of training camps — from Majorca to Lanzarote to the highlands of Kenya.

Warm Weather Training

William has been attending training camps since 1997, when he qualified for the UK’s National Sports Lottery scheme — a milestone that provided the additional funding to make warm weather preparation possible.

Majorca was the initial venue for a couple of years, taking advantage of the warmer climate, longer daylight hours, and varied terrain that Orkney cannot offer in winter. However, when William’s preferred camp window shifted to March, Majorca proved too cold for the purpose.

He switched to Playa Blanca in Lanzarote for several years after that — a warmer, more reliable alternative on the southern tip of the island.

From 1997

Majorca, Spain

Initial warm weather venue. Varied terrain and longer daylight hours suited early-season base building.

Several years later

Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Switched after Majorca proved too cold in March. Southern Lanzarote offered more reliable warmth for the preferred training window.

From 2025 — current

Iten, Kenya

High altitude training at 2,400m/8,000ft. Now William’s primary training camp destination.

High Altitude Training

Since 2025, William has been travelling to Iten in northeastern Kenya for high altitude training. Iten has become a Mecca for distance runners worldwide, and with good reason: its optimal altitude of 2,400m/8,000 feet, low humidity, and consistent, favourable weather create near-perfect conditions for building endurance.

William’s Approach

William spent six weeks in Iten during March and April 2025, followed by four weeks in January 2026 — ten weeks in total across his two visits.

His approach to Iten is characteristically independent. He goes as an individual, without a Kenyan coach, and is not “running with the Kenyans.” He simply arrives and does his own thing — the same self-directed methodology that has guided his training throughout his career.

"I like going there. I like the local people and the climate is perfect. Having now been there for a total of 10 weeks my conclusion is that, for me, it’s anti-ageing!”

— William Sichel

Why Iten Works

Training at altitude stimulates the body to produce more red blood cells, increasing oxygen-carrying capacity. For an athlete in his seventies, the combination of altitude adaptation, consistent warm weather, and low humidity creates an environment that complements Orkney’s winter training in a way that no lower-altitude camp can replicate.

The results speak for themselves: Iten has become a permanent feature of William’s annual training cycle.
