From William at the finish
William’s own account of the last two days, recorded shortly after the finish:
"Mainly it was about the heat, these last two days. Yesterday it was about 30, today it was hotter, 32 plus I’d say. Seriously hot, and that subdued everyone. There was more walking done by everybody. It was too hard to run, basically, in that sort of temperature.
The other main news in the race was the performance of the American woman, Megan Eckert, who set a whole series of world records, including the overall world record. She just ran steadily the whole time and reeled off a string of performances nobody had seen before. That was a big talking point.”
Megan Eckert finished on 1,023.948km, winning the championship outright ahead of every man in the field, and becoming the first woman to pass 1,000km in a six-day race. The distance is pending ratification.
With thanks
William was keen to single out one source of support in particular:
"One last thing I’d like to say is that my performance really was thanks to the Stromness Health Suite. I spent over six hours in the steam rooms, and honestly, without doing that I would have feared for my performance here. So good on the Stromness Health Suite for having the facilities while the Pickaquoy Centre is out of action, which meant I could prepare properly for this event. Very grateful to them.”
William’s racing is supported by the Athlete Travel Awards Scheme, funded by Orkney Islands Council, sportscotland and Orkney Builders.
Daily reports through the week were prepared by Alan Young from Sanday, with photos from William and from the EMU 6 Day Race.
