Featured in The Orcadian: “Multi-day man completes comeback 300-mile run”
My return to multi-day racing made the Sport pages of The Orcadian on Thursday 17 September, under the headline "Multi-day man completes comeback 300-mile run.”
The article follows the road back after the COVID pandemic and my own medical issues, including a hip replacement in 2023, to the GOMU 6 Day World Championships in Balatonfüred, Hungary. I covered 485.70 km (301.80 miles) in the six days and finished fourth in the M70 age group, setting a number of Scottish age group records along the way.
It also picks up on the conditions. The weather stayed dry but turned hot and humid, peaking at 32C on the last day, and the six hours I spent in the sauna and steam room at the Stromness Health Suite beforehand proved invaluable. As I told the paper, it was great to be fit enough to run these multi-day events again. It feels like returning to join my tribe.
My thanks to The Orcadian for the coverage, to the ATAS scheme, funded by sportscotland, Orkney Islands Council and Orkney Builders, for the financial support, and to my virtual crew, Alan, Dan, Erica and Jessica.
My own account of the race is in Back With My Tribe: Six Days in Hungary, and the full day by day coverage is on the GOMU 6 Day World Championship 2026 race page.
